When you write your will, we'll ask who you would like to inherit your residuary estate. Your residuary estate is everything that remains once any debts, taxes and specific cash gifts have been paid. As writing a will is all about being prepared, we'll ask you to choose back up beneficiaries too.
Log in to your account to get started
Start by logging into your account at Farewill.com. Tap the yellow button which says ‘Start writing your will’, or use the 'Your Will' link at the top of the page.
This will take you to the main page where you can see your responses to the online wills questionnaire. Your responses to these questions will populate the will you make with us.
Scroll to the 'Your estate' section
If you haven't added any beneficiaries yet, tap the 'Get started' button. If you'd like to make changes to people or organisations you've already included, tap the link that says 'Edit'.
The next page provides some information about what’s included in your residuary estate. When you’re ready, tap ‘Next’ and you’ll land on the page where you can add, edit or update the details of who you’d like to inherit.
Confirm or add the people you would like to include
If you've already added people to your will (for example, your partner or child) you'll see them listed here. If you would like to leave them a percentage of your residuary estate, tick the checkbox next to their name. You'll also see the option to add someone new.
When you've added all the people you would like to include and ticked the boxes next to their name to confirm, tap 'Save and continue'.
Choose any charities you'd like to support
Next, decide whether you'd like to leave a gift to charity. If the answer is yes, either select or search for the charity you would like to include. When you're ready, tap 'Save and continue'.
Choose how you'd like to share your estate
Your residuary estate is divided into percentages. By default, you'll see it's split equally between the people and organisations you've included so far.
You can adjust the percentages - but remember, they must add up to 100.
When you're happy with your choices, tap 'Save and continue'.
Add secondary beneficiaries
We ask you to add secondary beneficiaries incase your chosen beneficiaries die before you. You'll see the option to:
- add the child of your primary beneficiary (for example, if your primary beneficiary was your brother, you could add his child)
- add specific people or charities (you'll be able to add the details of new people or charities)
- split the inheritance equally between your other beneficiaries
When you're happy with your choices, tap 'Save and continue'.
Review your estate summary
This page outlines the people and charities you've chosen, and the percentage of your residuary estate that each of them will receive. If you need to, tap 'Make changes' to make any updates.
You'll also see the option to explain why you've left someone out of your will. If you've chosen to leave a close family member out of your will, it's important to complete this section, in case your will is ever contested in the future.
When you're ready, tap 'Done' to return to your home screen.
Tap edit to make further changes
A summary of your choices is shown on your will homescreen. To make further changes in the future, just tap 'Edit'.
