With Farewill, there are two ways to leave a gift to charity:
- as percentage share of your residuary estate in the ‘your estate’ section
- as a specific sum of money to a charity in the ‘Gifts’ section
In this article, we'll explain how to leave a specific sum of money.
Scroll to the 'Gift' section in your will
To start, log in to your account and tap 'Your will' at the top of the page.
Scroll to the 'Optional' section where you'll see a box titled 'Gifts'. Tap 'Add gifts'.
On the next page, you'll see the options to leave different types of gifts. Tap the 'Add' button in the box that says 'Some money'.
Enter the amount and scroll to the Charities section
You'll see a box where you can enter the amount you'd like to leave. When you're ready, scroll down the page to the Charities section.
You'll see the option to leave money to some of the charities we work with. If you'd like to select one of these, just tick the relevant box. If you'd prefer to leave a gift to a different charity, just tap the link that says 'Add your own charity'.
Adding your own charity
You'll be asked for the charity's name, and their charity number. If you don't know the charity number, you'll see a link to look it up on the Charity Commission website. It's important to get the charity number right, to make sure they definitely receive your gift as you've intended.
Leaving a message
Once you've chosen your charity, you'll see the option to leave a message. You don't have to leave a message, but some people choose to explain why they've left a gift - for example, as a thank you for the good work they do, or in someone's memory.
When you're ready, tap 'Save and continue'.
You'll be taken back to the Gifts page, where you can review the gift you've just included, and add another gift, if you'd like to.
Adding more than one charity
There's no limit to the amount of charities you can include in your will. To leave a gift to another charity, scroll down to the 'Some money' section and repeat the process.
Gifts to charity are free from inheritance tax
Anything you leave to a UK-registered charity will be exempt from Inheritance Tax. A gift to charity can also be a way to help you save Inheritance tax if you have a taxable estate.
